In my role as a User Experience Designer, I am a part of the Esports Cal State administrative team which organizes a common interest group of faculty, staff, and students centered on esports and gaming. My primary responsibilities include organizing agendas for monthly interest group meetings, designing digital assets for events, and periodically assessing the student experience via satisfaction surveys and student leader meetings.
"Unconference" Data Analysis
Before I began my role, Esports Cal State hosted an "unconference" which was a deconstructed virtual event for gaming, speakers, and community building across the campuses' esports groups. The team administered a survey to students asking about their current experience with esports and their ideal future state.
With the data, I interpreted the main themes and organized it visually to share with campus stakeholders like CIOs.
The key takeaways and asks from surveying students included:
- General resources and information for program operations
- Community building opportunities across the CSU
- Advocacy and financial assistance
- DEI initiatives in esports
Esports Cal State Cup Tournament
From a brainstorm to address the ask for more community building opportunities, the admin team conceptualized the "Cal State Cup" tournament to be an annual CSU-exclusive tournament to feature an esports game to grown camaraderie.
The inaugural tournament took place on Saturday, March 4, 2023 and featured Rocket League as the game. Ten campus teams participated in a single elimination bracket.
In preparation for the tournament, I worked alongside student assistants/interns to create digital assets for social media and a dynamic landing page for registration and tournament updates.
